The first things you learn are often the most important. Good basics give you a sound base to build upon. Most people rush ahead of themselves in the arts trying to learn as many techniques as they can - MISTAKE!! If you want to be a great fighter, you need strong basics. If you look at the four basic kicks - front, side, roundhouse and back - you can see that all the more advanced kicks are just variations of those four kicks. Therefore it makes sense that to be any good at advanced kicks you need to take the time to try and perfect your basics. This applies to everything. Another side to this is that when you are confronted by the prospect of a real fight, your body floods with adrenaline and with no time to think, your fine coordination skills will desert you and you'll be left with what's been drilled into you repeatedly - that's right! - THE BASICS. Take the time to revisit your basics and see how both your newer techniques and combat ability improve. |
