Starting Out in the Martial Arts

For most who take them up, the martial arts are a life changing addition to whatever it is they do. They offer a combination of benefits - self defense, confidence, fitness and whole host of others.

Starting off in the arts though is a daunting task for many people and choosing the right school takes more than luck.

So, you've decided to take up the martial arts, but where do you go from there...?

Joining a Club

The first thing to do is to start checking out schools in your area.  Most schools will let you watch for free.  Now then, here is the most valuable piece of advice in this article:

CHOOSE AN INSTRUCTOR AND NOT A STYLE!!

You'll hear a lot about "my style's better than yours" etc.  This is c**p.  Each style has its value, the most important thing is how its taught.  Here's a checklist of things you should look for in a school.

  1. REALISM - check to see if the techniques are trained in a realistic way i.e. responses to actual attacks you'll see on the street - no spinning, jumping or flipping kicks!!
  2. Can the instructor explain things well - is he a good teacher?
  3. Does the instructor join in with drills?  Make sure your instructor can prove his ability.
  4. Don't go to an instructor who believes he is too deadly to train with you.
  5. Make sure the instructor pays attention to all his class members.

Once you have found a school don't forget to take it easy for the first few lessons.  Build your skills, don't break your body.

There you have it, all the advice you need to find the best school in your area.

GOOD LUCK!!
